State Champions! AHS beat the defending
State champs Massillon on Brownie Spreng's two field goals. After
beating the top contender Barberton and undefeated Norwalk Coach
Moore advertised in the Cleveland paper that AHS would take on
all comers. No one took the challenge. Consequently Ashland proclaimed
their State Championship. The OHSAA recognizes Fostoria (8-1) as the state champs.
The brilliant four-year careers of Warren Spreng, Paul Ganyard,
and Martin Moore ended one of the greatest all-round backfields
in AHS football history. Percy McDowell was excellent on defense.
Mart Moore was a three-time Captain. Paul Ganyard was the punter
and a great broken field runner, who scored 8 TDs. Warren Spreng
was a dangerous kicker inside the 40-yardline. Brownie was the
leading scorer: 9 TDs, 4 FGs, 11 Xpts for 68 points. On the
line Howard Winbigler and Harry Pifer were outstanding three-year
starters. The team averaged 145 pounds per man. Also, it was
the first year for Black jerseys with Orange stripes on the
arms. After defeating the Massillon "Tigers" with
the same colors AHS adopted the colors as their "charmed"
standard.
